The agency of technology can confuse us to forget that no idea is free from nature—nothing we do or think about in the metaverse is independent of bits and atoms. Furthermore, all ideas originate and are in conversation (sci-fi) with nature.
The metaverse is a shared metaphor, a form of media, a gaming medium, now attempting to detach itself from reality. In recent conversations (with students and elsewhere) on metaverse, NFTs, and DAO's I focus on psychology, and within that, the framing.
Appreciating the cartoonish fallacy to detach the metaverse from nature and market a magic tunnel between all of our imagination seems shortsighted.
I wonder if the metaverse (the idea, not letters) is a metaphor, which will underdeliver. Complexity thinking gives us tools to pierce through such promises while accepting emerging forms of value.
